DANCE PARTIES NYC - Deep Playa

Formed in 2020 at the height of the global Covid pandemic emerged a light in the darkness. A desire to reconnect with fellow human beings who had been trapped inside, behind masks and screens. As the weather improved and welcomed in the sunshine, so we ventured out into the wilderness in search of connection.

The impact of social distancing on our psyche was profound, many of us had not had meaningful connections with our friends and family, hiding away in our apartments for fear of getting sick. The desire to reconnect with one another was strong, but how could we do this safely?

Founded on the 10 principles of Burning Man plus the 11th consent, Deep Playa embodies the spirit of the burn, but instead of a desert, it exists within the concrete jungle that we call home, New York City. Deep Playa is a labor of love, with hundreds of volunteers over the years making the magic happen, it only happens because YOU get involved.

And so in July 2020 on Fort Tilden beach in New York City, a simple daytime beach party was thrown with a few friends who wanted to feel the sun on their faces, the sand beneath their toes, all while dancing to damn good music. The energy was contagious, and so this one beach party ignited the fire. What followed was no short of magical, as more folks discovered the movement, we convened under the cover of darkness, at the beach, in tunnels, at the park, anywhere outdoors we could dance under the stars.

With over 30 events from 2020 to 2026, renegades, micro burns, and various venues around NYC, we have created something truly special. And that momentum cannot be stopped. As we evolve on our journey, Deep Playa will always be in our hearts and minds. One of our missions is to rejuvenate public spaces and repurpose them at night time into popup dance parties. For dancing is at the heart of what we do, a primal core of the human experience.
